A necklace is jewelry or an article of clothing which is worn around the neck. Necklaces are usually made of precious metals like gold, silver, platinum & are usually adorned with precious gems such as diamond, ruby, sapphire, emerald, and amethyst or semi-precious stones. Necklaces are frequently formed from a gold chain, silver chain, platinum chain often attached to a locket or pendant. Necklaces can also be manufactured with cloth, and they sometimes contain rocks (particularly gems), wood, and/or shells.

A necklace worn high on the neck is a choker.A choker is a tight-fitting necklace, worn high on the neck. This type of jewelry can consist of one or more bands circling the neck. Chokers can be made of a variety of materials, including velvet, beads, metal and leather. They may or may not be adorned with sequins, studs or some kind of pendant and come in a variety of colours.

Many Christians wear a cross or crucifix on a necklace.

A necklace sometimes refers to necklacing, a form of execution in which a rubber tire, filled with kerosene, is forced around a victim's chest and arms and set on fire.

In jewelry, a collar is an ornament for the neck.Collar is an older word for necklace, and is usually reserved today for a necklace that lies flat to the body rather than hanging freely.

The Necklace or The Diamond Necklace (original title: La Parure) is a short story by Guy de Maupassant, first published in 1884 in the French newspaper Le Gaulois. The story has become one of Maupassant's most popular works and is well known for its twist ending. It is also the inspiration for Henry James' short story, Paste. It was first translated into English by Marjorie Laurie in 1934.
The Necklace tells the story of a middle class couple, Monsieur and Madame Loisel, who are invited to a distinguished party. Madame Loisel, however, is hesitant to attend, complaining that "there's nothing so humiliating as looking poor in the middle of a lot of rich women." In addition to acquiring a new dress, at her husband's suggestion she borrows a necklace from her friend, Madame Forestier, and attends the party. Distressingly, Madame Loisel somehow loses the necklace during the evening.
Monsieur and Madame Loisel decide they must buy an identical diamond necklace as a replacement for Madame Forestier. Unable to bear the shame of this, they do not inform Madame Forestier of the change and spend the next ten years of their lives paying off the debts from the new necklace. Both Monsieur and Madame Loisel are forced to take on extra jobs and live in abject poverty. At the end of the ten years, Madame Loisel is finally able to tell her old friend of the change. Madame Forestier is shocked and informs Madame Loisel that her original necklace was, in fact, paste and not real diamonds, "...worth at the very most five hundred francs! . . . "
